RFID Parking Management Solution

Our product introduces a radio frequency identification (RFID) parking management system that incorporates quantity monitoring with an automatic notification system. Available parking spaces in a parking area can be updated in a remote database using SQL commands in real-time as the vehicles’ tags are scanned by an RFID reader upon entering or exiting a parking area using software created in VB.NET. The collected data will be updated on an LED display located at the site of the parking area. An end user website was created using ASP and is located on a Windows Server 2003 machine. The website includes both an interactive mapping feature, which displays the available spaces in each parking area, and a unique notification system, which gives advanced notice of parking space availability to registered system users.

SmarterParking Management Software

The SmarterParkingTM Management Software prototype is a .Net framework program designed to monitor vehicle actions within specified parking area or other similar situations.  The software monitors vehicles via Radio Frequency Identification Tags, Readers and other various sensing mechanisms.  SmarterParkingTM Management software interactions and procedures can be divided into five main categories.  These categories include RFID Reader Data Collection, SQL Server and Database Communication, LED Display Interaction, Monitoring Specifications, and Additional Sensors. 

Software capabilities

• Allows the user to specify the lot information that the reader will be monitoring.
• Adjust the brightness of the on location LED Display. 
• Notifies the user when the hardware is connected or disconnected. 
• Displays each tag as it enters or leaves the parking lot. 
• Displays all of the available parking spaces in the specified lot as well as displaying illegally parked cars.

ASP Website

The purpose of the ASP website is to enable a user to view real-time availability of parking spaces.  This is accomplished in two different ways.  The first method uses an interactive mapping feature on a website while the second method enables an automatic notification system through a cellular phone.  The website uses “vbscript” and “javascript” scripting languages.  The site can be accessed by anyone including students and parking mangement.  Parking management will also have access to a client-side site for administration purposes.

The client website was created to assist parking management in identifying illegally parked cars, as well as, gathering statistics of each individual parking area and the lot’s respective peak volume times.  The system is capable of searching for an individual vehicle by license plate or by permit number.  The client-side can also locate all illegally parked vehicles within an individual lot or identify every vehicle within a given lot.  This system both aides in the distribution of parking tickets and the recognition of future parking needs by analyzing the parking statistics.
